Yan Bingtao is best known as the youngest player to win the Amateur World Snooker Championship after defeating Muhammad Sajjad 8–7.

Having qualified to compete on the main tour for the 2015–16 season, Yan Bingtao was unable to obtain a UK Visa, and decided to dedicate the year to completing his education in China.

For his personal life, Yan Bingtao is not married but is in a relationship with Ada Zhang.

According to yqqlm, Ada Zhang accompanied Bingtao, who is now based in Sheffield, when he came to live in the UK. Like Bingtao, Ada Zhang is a Shandong native and now works in the UK.

According to The Sun, Ada Zhang has been living with Yan Bingtao since the start of the covid-19 pandemic.

Yan Bingtao resumed his career in 2016 and became the youngest-ever ranking event finalist at the 2017 Northern Ireland Open, losing to Mark Williams 9–8.

Early in the 2019–20 season, Yan Bingtao won his first ranking title in the Riga Masters at the age of 19, becoming the third Chinese player to win a ranking title (after Ding Junhui and Liang Wenbo).

Yan Bingtao won his first Triple Crown event at the 2021 Masters, winning in deciding frames in every match up until the final, where he defeated John Higgins 10–8, coming back from 3–5 and 5–7 behind.
