An Arizona woman who accused former major league pitcher Trevor Bauer of sexual assault now faces charges of defrauding the baseball player.

According to an indictment unsealed on Monday in Maricopa County Superior Court, the woman is charged with fraud and theft by extortion, both felonies.
The indictment alleges that Bauer and another person were victims of a fraudulent scheme spanning several years, although specific details about the alleged crimes were not provided.
The woman filed a lawsuit against Bauer in December 2022, claiming that he raped her in late 2020, which resulted in pregnancy. However, Bauer was never arrested or charged in connection with the allegations.
In response to the lawsuit, Bauer countersued, asserting that he had a consensual sexual encounter with the woman in 2020 and accused her of attempting to extort money from him by falsely claiming pregnancy.

Bauer’s attorneys stated that the woman made several million-dollar demands against him. Ultimately, Bauer said he paid $8,761 for expenses he believed were related to the woman’s reported pregnancy and its subsequent termination.
The woman later revealed that she decided not to terminate the pregnancy but experienced a miscarriage.
The woman is scheduled to be arraigned on the criminal charges next Friday, April 26, 2024. In a recorded video statement released Tuesday, April 16, Bauer maintained his innocence and expressed frustration over the situation, emphasizing his desire to return to work and continue earning a living.
Bauer has been working to revive his major league career after serving a suspension for violating the league’s domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse policy.
Following his suspension, Bauer played with the Yokohama DeNA BayStars in Japan’s Pacific League and recently signed a deal to pitch for Mexico’s Diablos Rojos.
