Winnifred Ntumi Shines for Ghana in Weightlifting, Secures Three Medals at African Games 2023

Ghanaian weightlifter Winnifred Ntumi demonstrated her exceptional talent on the global stage, clinching three medals – one gold and two silver – at the African Games 2023, held at the GCB Hall of the University of Ghana.

Ntumi, aged 21, showcased her prowess in the 49-kilogram Snatch and Clean and Jerk categories, earning silver medals in both disciplines.

Additionally, she claimed the gold medal in the overall 49kg category, marking a historic achievement for the host nation.

In the Snatch category, Ntumi secured second place with a remarkable performance of 63, closely trailing behind Mauritius’ Sheridane Pasnin, who clinched the gold with a lift of 64.

Madagascar’s Ny Hasina Andrimitantsoa Zo Lalainarinirina secured the bronze with a lift of 60.

Moving to the Clean and Jerk category, Ntumi once again showcased her skill, earning a silver medal with a lift of 81.

Tunisia’s Wada claimed the gold with a lift of 81, while Zo Lalain secured the bronze with a lift of 80.

Ntumi’s exceptional performance in both categories culminated in a total tally of 144, earning her the gold medal overall in the 49-kilogram category.

These achievements further solidify Ntumi’s impressive track record in weightlifting. Notably, she secured three bronze medals in the women’s 45kg events at the 2019 African Games in Rabat, Morocco.

Additionally, at just 16 years old, Ntumi won a bronze medal in the women’s 49kg bodyweight category at the Africa Seniors Weightlifting Championship in Cairo, Egypt, in 2019.

Her success continued in December 2021 when she won bronze in the 49kg category during the World Championship/Commonwealth qualification held in Uzbekistan.
