Food stamp benefits supplied roughly 40 million Americans in 2018, at an expenditure of $57.1 billion.
Approximately 9.2% of American households obtained food stamp benefits at some point during 2017, with approximately 16.7% of all children living in households with food stamp benefits.
Beneficiaries and costs increased sharply with the Great Recession, peaked in 2013 and have declined through 2017 as the economy recovered.

Will Virginia get extra food stamps this month?

On Jan. 5 2022, the Virginia Department of Social Services announced that they will be releasing emergency allotments of benefits to eligible families later in the month.
According to officials, the benefits will automatically be loaded to recipients’ Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards on Sunday, January 16.
Emergency allotment benefits are, however, only available to current food stamp households only and do not apply to Pandemic EBT recipients.
