On 10 July 2023, ITV confirmed that Gascoyne will be taking an “extended break” from playing Peter Barlow after 23 years. As the curtains closed on his final episode, fans are left wondering: Will Chris Gascoyne ever return to the cobbled streets of Weatherfield?

Chris Gascoyne’s journey as Peter Barlow began in 2000, and over the years, he became a staple in the Coronation Street narrative. Hailing from Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire, Gascoyne’s portrayal of Ken Barlow’s son resonated with audiences, even during a hiatus between 2003 and 2007.

His departure from the show was marked by an emotional final episode, where he shared the screen predominantly with Alison King, who played his on-screen partner Carla Connor.

Reflecting on his departure, Gascoyne praised the writing of his last script, expressing genuine emotion as he read through it. “I genuinely felt moved by it,” he shared. The actor highlighted the unpredictability of scenes with Alison King, emphasizing the authentic reactions that kept both the actors and the audience engaged.

While Gascoyne remains tight-lipped about the specifics of Peter Barlow’s exit, he reassures fans that the door is being left open. In an interview, he mentioned, “Of course I’ve not ruled [a return] out, it’s been such a part of my life.” Gascoyne acknowledged the need for a break and a chance to explore different opportunities, noting that he’s “excited about the future.”

Walking away from Coronation Street was not without its challenges for the actor. Gascoyne expressed the emotional difficulty of parting ways with the people he has known for nearly half of his life, not just fellow actors but the entire production team and crew.
