Sir Lenworth George Henry was born at Burton Road Hospital on August 29, 1958, in Dudley, United Kingdom, to Winston Jervis Henry and Winifred Louise Henry (1922–1998). His parents had emigrated to Britain from Jamaica.

Lenny Henry is the fifth of his parents’ seven children as well as the first to be born in the United Kingdom. He attended St John’s Primary School and later The Blue Coat School in Dudley.

Lenny Henry completed his schooling at W.R. Tuson College in Preston, Lancashire.  He obtained a BA Hons degree in English Literature from the Open University in 2007 and an MA in Screenwriting for TV and Film from Royal Holloway, University of London in 2010.

Lenny Henry is best known for co-founding the charity Comic Relief. He has made appearances in TV programmes, including children’s entertainment show Tiswas, sitcom Chef! and The Magicians for BBC One.

Lenny Henry is currently the Chancellor of Birmingham City University and was previously married to British icon, Dawn French. The two separated after 25 years of marriage and have one child together, a daughter named Billie.
