Before becoming well-known for winning the 400-meter event both indoors and outdoors at the 2017 NCAA Championships, American athlete Fred Kerley began his career as a 200-meter runner in high school.

Only after winning the indoor and outdoor NCAA championships did he begin competing in the 400-meter event in college. He added gold in the 400-meter relay and bronze in the 400-meter event to the silver he had already won in 2017 in London at the World Championships. He started his season in Grenada in March 2022, doing so in an incredible 44.47 seconds. In the 100 and 200 meter races, he was the first man to triumph.
