Why is Torrey Pines famous?

Tiger Woods’ success at Torrey Pines may be the reason for Torrey Pines’s fame. Tiger Woods won the Junior World Championship and eight PGA TOUR wins there, including the 2008 U.S. Open, where he defeated Rocco Mediate in a thrilling playoff.

The two 18-hole golf courses at Torrey Pines, North, and South, were both created by William Francis Bell who happens to be the son of noted course architect, William P. Bell. The South Course, which Rees Jones rebuilt in 2001, measures 7,802 yards (7,134 m) from the back tees.

The golf course is believed to be named for the Torrey pine. Torrey pine is a rare tree that grows exclusively along the coastline in California.
