The Torrey Pines Golf Course is named after the Torrey Pine trees that are native to the area and are prominent throughout the course.

The namesake Torrey Pine is a remnant of a prehistoric mountain range now submerged in the Pacific. The Torrey Pine tree was discovered in 1850 by Dr Charles Parry, who named it after his mentor and botanist Dr John Torrey.

Designed by legendary course architect William P. Bell and completed by his son, William F. Bell, Torrey Pines opened in 1957.
The course features bentgrass greens, Kikuyu fairways, and roughs, and is known for its challenging greens, tight fairways, and deep bunkers.
It is considered one of the best public golf courses in the United States. The course is known for its challenging layout, spectacular ocean views, and its use of natural terrain and vegetation.
More than 80,000 rounds annually are played on the North Course alone, while the South receives 60,000.
