A king cake, also known as a three kings cake, is a cake connected with Epiphany in various nations. Its shape and contents vary, but in most cases, a fève, such as a figurine purported to represent the Christ Child, is hidden inside.

Following the cutting of the cake, whoever receives the fève wins a gift. The tradition of the King cake has been associated with the Epiphany since the nineteenth century.

The Three Kings cake is named after the Biblical Magi, also known as the three kings: Melchior, Balthazar, and Gaspard, who came to Jesus twelve days after his birth to present him gifts.

Why is the baby no longer allowed to be in the king cake when you buy it?

The baby symbolizes luck and prosperity to whoever finds it. That person is also responsible for purchasing next year’s cake or hosting the next Mardi Gras party.

Often, bakers place the baby outside of the cake, leaving the purchaser to hide it themselves. This is usually to avoid liability for any choking hazard.

What happens if you find the baby in the king cake?

Remember, finding the baby inside the king cake not only makes you a “king,” but it also comes with some responsibilities.

If you are so fortunate to find the baby in your slice of cake, you will be responsible for hosting the next Mardi Gras celebration and providing the next king cake!
