The title of the film refers to the efforts of Walt Disney, played by Tom Hanks, to persuade P.L. Travers, played by Emma Thompson, to allow him to make a film adaptation of her book “Mary Poppins.”

Travers was hesitant to allow Disney to adapt the book because she was protective of the character and did not want to see her beloved creation transformed into a Hollywood musical.

Throughout the film, Disney tries to “save” Mr Banks, the father character in “Mary Poppins,” by convincing Travers to allow him to make the film.

The title of the film, “Saving Mr Banks,” refers to Disney’s efforts to persuade Travers to allow him to bring the story of “Mary Poppins” to the screen and to the character of Mr Banks, who is in need of saving in the film.
