Despite his notable performances in films, Nielsen later gained enduring recognition for his deadpan comedy roles during the 1980s, after being cast in the Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker comedy film Aeroplane! Nielsen specialised in portraying characters who were both unaware of and complicit in their absurd surroundings in his comedy roles.

Nielsen’s performance in Aeroplane! was a watershed moment in his career, dubbed “the Olivier of spoofs” by film critic Roger Ebert and paved the way for further success in the genre with The Naked Gun film series, based on the earlier short-lived television series Police Squad!, in which he also starred. He received numerous honours and was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame.

Following the success of “Airplane!,” Nielsen became synonymous with the comedy genre. He went on to star in a string of popular parody films, most notably the “Naked Gun” trilogy, in which he portrayed the bumbling and dim-witted detective, Frank Drebin. With a career spanning 60 years, he appeared in more than 100 films and 150 television programs, portraying more than 220 characters.
