Joshua trees are not in Africa and are endemic to North America and have no close relatives in Africa. However, other species of yucca grow in Africa, such as the giant yucca (Yucca elephantipes) and the red yucca (Yucca gloriosa).

These plants have similar adaptations to dry conditions, such as thick, fleshy leaves that store water and prevent evaporation. Joshua trees are named after the biblical figure Joshua, who was said to have stretched his arms to the sky in prayer.

Some Mormon settlers who crossed the Mojave Desert in the 19th century thought that the trees resembled Joshua and gave them this name. However, this origin is not confirmed by historical records.

Joshua trees are threatened by climate change, invasive species, wildfires, and human development. They are slow-growing and have a complex pollination system that depends on a single type of moth.
