Lawson first experienced diabetes issues in 2003, when he lost the use of one leg and his vision in one eye.

On April 9, 2011, just over a month after receiving the IGDA Award, he passed away from diabetes-related complications.

He was survived by his wife, two children, and brother at the time of his passing; he lived in Santa Clara, California.

Why is Jerry Lawson sometimes known as the father of modern gaming?

He oversaw the group that created the first home video game console with swappable cartridges, laying the groundwork for later consoles like the Atari and Super Nintendo.

Given that Lawson was one of the few Black engineers working in the IT business in the 1970s, his accomplishments were particularly noteworthy.
