Greenwashing, also called green sheen, is a form of advertising or marketing spin in which green PR and green marketing are deceptively used to persuade the public that an organization’s products, aims, and policies are environmentally friendly.

Why is it called greenwashing?

Performed through the use of environmental imagery, misleading labels, and hiding tradeoffs, greenwashing is a play on the term “whitewashing,” which means using false information to intentionally hide wrongdoing, error, or an unpleasant situation in an attempt to make it seem less bad than it is.

How do you identify greenwashing?

In short, companies that make unsubstantiated claims that their products are environmentally safe or provide some green benefits are involved in greenwashing. Eco-friendly products can benefit from green marketing, which highlights the environmental benefits of the product and the company making it.

Greenwashing is the process of conveying a false impression or providing misleading information about how a company’s products are more environmentally sound.
