Charles Sobhraj is a French serial killer, fraudster, and thief. Sobhraj returned to Nepal in 2003 after leaving Paris and set up a shawl export company under a false identity.

He is quickly recognised and arrested in Kathmandu for the 1975 murders of two tourists, a Canadian backpacker Laurent Armand Carriere and American Connie Joe Bronzich. He received a life sentence in August 2004.
Charles Sobhraj spent 19 years in jail in Nepal for killing two North Americans in 1975. Sobhraj had preyed on mostly young Western backpackers on the hippie trail in India and Thailand.

Nepal’s Supreme Court ordered Sobhraj’s release on Wednesday December 21 2022, after his legal team successfully petitioned for a reduction in his prison term for health reasons.
Nepalese law also allows inmates who have demonstrated good character and served 75% of their sentence to be released.
“Keeping him in prison indefinitely is not in accordance with the prisoner’s human rights,” the verdict stated, according to AFP, citing regular heart disease treatment as another factor in his release. In 2017, he underwent heart surgery.
Sobhraj told AFP ahead of his departure on Friday December 23 2022, that he felt “great” about his freedom, but that he would take legal action against the Nepalese government.
