Why is Ariana DeBose famous?
On March 27, 2022, DeBose received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for playing Anita.
She is the first Afro-Latina, the first openly queer actor of color, and the first openly queer woman to win an Oscar, as well as the first openly queer woman of color to receive an acting nomination.
In the film, DeBose has appeared in the Netflix musical film The Prom (2020) and the Apple TV+ musical comedy series Schmigadoon! (2021).
She gained widespread recognition for her role as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s musical West Side Story (2021), winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
