Why is Anthony Watson not playing in the Six Nations?

Henry Slade’s hip injury has forced him to withdraw from England’s rugby team ahead of their Six Nations opener against Scotland. Anthony Watson has thus been called up to the team. For the next Calcutta Cup encounter at Twickenham Stadium, Steve Borthwick, who is taking on his first head coaching position for England, has assembled a team of 36 players at their headquarters in Surrey.

Elliot Daly, who has been in outstanding form with Saracens but is sidelined for the entire season, has already caused problems for Borthwick.

While Jamie George has rejoined the team following a brain injury and is undergoing return-to-play protocols, other forwards, notably Luke Cowan-Dickie, Tom Curry, and Will Stuart, are still undergoing rehabilitation.

Watson, who last played for England at the end of the 2021 Six Nations, has a chance now that Slade is hurt. The 28-year-old Leicester player demonstrated his abilities and form on Saturday during their game at Welford Road against Northampton. But as he battles for a starting spot, Watson must contend with fierce opposition from younger challengers.

Borthwick and his team are adamant about performing well against Scotland and winning their first game despite the difficulties.
