Why doesn’t Steph Houghton play for England?

Stephanie Houghton is an English professional footballer who plays for Manchester City in the Women’s Super League and for the England women’s national team. Houghton began her club career at Sunderland in her native North East England before moving on to Leeds United in 2007 and Arsenal Ladies in 2010.

Houghton began her career with Sunderland, where she spent five years. She helped Sunderland achieve promotion from the Northern Division in 2005-06, and she was named FA Young Player of the Year in 2006-07.

Houghton was the first female player to feature on the cover of Shoot magazine in October 2014.

Houghton was awarded the Freedom of the City of Sunderland in March 2023; at the ceremony, the Sunderland Echo inquired how to spell her surname.
