Tyne Daly’s anticipated role in the upcoming Broadway production of Doubt has been relinquished due to an undisclosed health matter. The esteemed 77-year-old actress, known for her Emmy Award-winning performances, was slated to portray Sister Aloysius in the revival of John Patrick Shanley’s renowned play Doubt: A Parable, under the direction of Tony Award nominee Scott Ellis. It was confirmed on Tuesday that Daly’s recent hospitalization prompted her withdrawal from the role of the principled nun who becomes suspicious of a priest at an all-boys Catholic school in the Bronx.

In light of Daly’s absence, the first preview performance scheduled for Feb. 2 was canceled. Tony nominee Isabel Keating stepped into the role of Sister Aloysius for the second preview on Feb. 3, continuing until Amy Ryan assumes the part on Feb. 13. Scott Ellis, aged 66, expressed his sentiments in a statement, saying, “With respect and admiration for Tyne, we wish her the best and a quick recovery. We are grateful that Amy Ryan said yes – in a quick minute – to join our company and take on the role of ‘Sister Aloysius.’ We deeply appreciate Isabel Keating, who remarkably stepped in with a day of rehearsal and allowed us to get the production up on its feet during this first week of performances.”

Daly had not yet performed the role due to her hospitalization, according to a press release. Show organizers canceled the first preview held on Feb. 2 due to her sudden absence.

“Ms. Daly was unexpectedly hospitalized on Friday and unfortunately needs to withdraw from the production while she receives medical care; she is thankfully expected to make a full recovery,” the release conveyed.

The cast of Doubt: A Parable also includes Liev Schreiber as Father Flynn, Quincy Tyler Bernstine as Mrs. Muller, and Zoe Kazan as Sister James.

Doubt: A Parable is scheduled to officially open on March 7 at the Todd Haimes Theatre on Broadway. Tickets are available for purchase online at roundabouttheatre.org or in person at a Roundabout box office.

The 2008 film adaptation of Doubt starred Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Daly is renowned for her roles in Cagney & Lacey and Judging Amy, and has appeared in numerous Broadway productions, including the revival of Gypsy, Rabbit Hole, and Mothers and Sons.
