Why Did They Cancel The Golden Globes 2021?

The Golden Globes will be a bare bones event this year with covid-19, boycotts and NBC deciding not to broadcast the awards ceremony until at least 2023 all playing a role.

The show will go on returning to its early January slot, Sunday the 9th this year, but those wanting to know who the winners are will have to take to Twitter to find out.

Over the last year the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the organization that puts on the ceremony, has come under intense criticism for its lack of diversity and ethical concerns over how the winners are chosen.

It has spent 2021 trying to get its house in order, ditching its president, reforming its by-laws and adding new members.

A week prior to last year’s Golden Globes ceremony, which was held in February due to covid-19, a pair of articles published by the LA Times detailing its membership and questionable dealings led to a year of reckoning for the HFPA.

It was revealed that the organization had no Black members and the roughly 90 members had acted unprofessionally.

The story made public what was an open secret that members who are responsible for nominations and votes were treated to lavish gifts by studios.

Further embarrassment befell the HFPA in April when its then eight-term president Philip Berk sent a letter to members calling the Black Lives Matters a “racist hate movement.”

NBC, which has the broadcasting rights to the Golden Globes awards ceremony swiftly called for Berk to be expelled from the organization in order for the network “to move forward with the HFPA and the Golden Globes.”
