The St. Louis Blues made a significant decision on December 12, 2023, parting ways with head coach Craig Berube, who played a pivotal role in guiding the team to its first-ever Stanley Cup title.

The decision to relieve Berube of his coaching duties came on the heels of a disappointing 6-4 loss to the Detroit Red Wings, marking the Blues’ fourth consecutive defeat and the worst stretch of the season.

With a 13-14-1 record, the Blues find themselves in sixth place in the Central Division, trailing the division-leading Colorado by nine points and sitting in 10th place in the Western Conference.

One of the key factors contributing to Berube’s dismissal is the team’s struggle to find the back of the net consistently. The Blues rank 26th in the NHL in goals per game, managing an average of 2.82. Additionally, their power play has been a significant weakness, boasting the second-worst conversion rate in the league at 8.4% (7 for 83).

Craig Berube, 57, assumed the role of head coach in November 2018, initially as an interim coach before leading the team to a remarkable turnaround and ultimately securing the Stanley Cup in 2019.

Over his six seasons with the Blues, Berube accumulated a record of 206 wins, 131 losses, and 44 overtime or shootout losses. His win total ranks third in team history, with 24 playoff victories in 51 postseason games.

Despite the team’s past success, the recent struggles and the desire for a change in direction led to Berube’s departure. The Blues named Drew Bannister, coach of the Springfield Thunderbirds (the Blues’ AHL affiliate), as the interim head coach. The franchise now faces the challenge of regaining momentum and finding a new path forward under new leadership.
