On June 3, 2012, Johnson ended her comeback for the 2012 Olympic team and retired because of continuing problems with her left knee.

In 2010, Johnson injured her knee but continued to train over the next two years to make the 2012 US Olympic team. In June 2012, she decided not to on and announced her retirement from the sport.

Johnson was one of two female athletes to appear on AOL’s 100 most searched females on the internet for 2009, ranked 27th.
On August 15, 2013, Johnson, along with her 2007 World team teammates, was inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame.
Johnson was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2019.
