Why did Portugal’s prime minister resign?

On 7th November 2023, Portugal was rocked by the resignation of its Prime Minister, Antonio Costa. The decision to step down came as a shock to the nation and followed an unfolding scandal involving corruption and malfeasance within the ranks of his Socialist government.

The catalyst for Antonio Costa’s resignation was a series of ongoing investigations, searches, and arrests that involved several members of his government. Detention warrants were issued for a total of five individuals, and one notable figure included in this list was Mr. Costa’s chief of staff, Vítor Escária. It was reported by Público newspaper that Mr. Escária had been taken into custody.

Furthermore, in a startling development, Portugal’s Infrastructure Minister, João Galamba, was indicted as part of the ongoing inquiry into energy deals. The scale and impact of these investigations shook the political landscape of Portugal to its core.

In a televised address to the nation, Antonio Costa spoke about the decision to step down. He expressed his belief that the dignity of the role of Prime Minister was not compatible with any suspicions about his integrity, character, or involvement in any criminal activities. He asserted, “There is no illicit act that weighs on my conscience, or even any censurable act.”
