Baker had lived with pneumonia since he was young and he was later diagnosed with emphysema.
The condition affected his job such that he had to take breaks every thirty minutes during movie shoots.
Baker was born in Toledo, Ohio to Alice Birdene and William Alexander Hall.
He studied at the University of Toledo, and later served in Germany as a high school teacher and a translator for the U.S Army.
He launched his movie career while in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles Theatre Center, and went ahead to appear in over 185 films before his demise.

He is famous for starring in Boogie Nights (1997) and Magnolia (1999).
