Canadian artist and painter, Norval Morrisseau was raised by his grandparents. His grandfather was a traditional medicine man who introduced him Ojibwa shamanism and told him stories and legends passed down among Ojibwa people. He became so interested in them that he began to draw images to illustrate these stories. He would draw on the sandy beaches of Lake Nippigon with a stick and let the waves take the images away.

After he took painting as his official career, he was discouraged from sharing traditional stories and images outside of First Nation, however, he decided to focus on his goal and disregard such discouragement.

Are Norval Morrisseau’s paintings real?
Are Norval Morrisseau’s artworks fake? In 2005, a man named Kevin Hearn bought an original -or he thought – painting of Norval Morrisseau, however, the dealer could not prove how genuine it is and it caused a stir. For several years now, there have been several claims that most of Morrisseau’s paintings, some say 1000s of them are part of a ring of forgery that have raked in millions of dollars. Art owners have also retorted that these are just mere allegations, and that, the artworks by Norval Morrisseau they own are very original.
