Hendrick Motorsports announced in 2018 that Lowes would end its sponsorship of Johnson at the end of 2018. Lowes has been the primary sponsor of the No.48 for Johnson’s entire cup Series career.

Johnson ran a partial schedule in 2001 and went full time in the series in 2002. For Johnson and Hendrick motors, it meant the best NASCAR driver of his generation has a blank slate of inventory for the first time in nearly two decades.

For Lowes, they stated the decision was simply business.
The home improvement company teamed with Hendrick and Johnson in 2001 when the driver was nobody, Owner and company leapt the driver, Jeff Gordon promised they were going to be a star.
Gordon was right and Johnson was so good that Lowe’s couldn’t leave
