Why did Johnny Marr and Morrissey split?

The Smiths had broken up by the time September’s Strangeways, Here We Come came out. The majority of the blame for the breakdown has been placed on Morrissey’s displeasure with Marr’s collaborations with other musicians and Marr’s annoyance with Morrissey’s rigidity in the music department.

At a Patti Smith concert at Manchester’s Apollo Theatre in August 1978, Morrissey and Johnny Marr, then 14 years old, were briefly introduced to each other by common acquaintances. A few years later, in May 1982, Marr showed up at Morrissey’s door to inquire about the possibility of the two of them co-founding a band.
