Why did Guy Lafleur leave Montreal?
As he toured Canada playing in several Oldtimer’s Hockey Challenges, Guy was consistently confronted with the opinion, While he had never filed his retirement papers with the NHL, he did ask that the Canadiens release him from his contract to seek other employment in the league.
General manager, Serge Savard refused his request, as trading one of the most popular players in Canadiens history would have incurred a severe backlash from fans and the media. With no other options, he decided to retire, and his departure from the Canadiens was considered acrimonious.
