Fernando Botero was a Colombian artist best known for his paintings and sculptures of exaggerated human and animal forms. He was born in Medelln, Colombia, on April 19, 1932, and passed away in Monaco on September 15, 2023.

During his formative years, Botero spent several years attending a school for matadors, but his main passion was for the arts. The pre-Columbian and Spanish colonial art that surrounded him, as well as the political murals by Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, served as inspiration for him when he first started painting as a youngster.

In 1948, he first displayed his own artwork, and two years later, in Bogotá, he held his first one-man exhibition. He earned a living by copying paintings from the Prado Museum, notably those of his idols at the time, and selling them to visitors while he was studying painting in Madrid in the early 1950s.
