Who Was Tomas Ceida? Man loses life falling asleep in DJ booth when nightclub was on fire

Tomas Ceida was an Essex builder who died after falling asleep in the DJ booth of a nightclub that later burnt down.

Tomas Ceida was a Lithuanian-born labourer. He was rescued by a firefighter and the nightclub’s manager after he was seen crawling through the fire fully in flames. Tomas was reportedly working at Studio 338 in Greenwich, southeast London, when the fire broke out in August 2016.

Tomas Ceida got trapped after the fire tore through the nightclub. It is assumed that he slept off in the DJ booth when the August 8 fire began at around 11.45 a.m. He was the only person who died out of the around 15 people that were employed.

Tomas Ceida passed away the following day in the hospital after suffering burns to 75% of his body. His cause of death was identified as burns and smoke inhalation.

According to Matthew Cullen from the fire investigations team at London Fire Brigade, the cause of the fire may have been a “shower of hot sparks” from power tools operating on the roof above.

In his own words,

“We have CCTV footage from outside the nightclub in the recycling yard adjacent, which showed two people on the roof doing works that generated a lot of sparks during the course of the morning.

“They were working above the area where we saw the fire start. We know from experience that sparks generated by hot works, whether it be by disc cutting or oxyacetylene work, are very adept at starting a fire, particularly where the wall is constructed of something like straw.”
