Personal trainer Thomas Mansfield ordered a 100g packet of caffeine powder to make supplement drinks at his family home

Using the packet, the 29-year-old from Colwyn Bay, North Wales, concocted a combination with seven times the suggested amount before ‘necking’ it.

Suzannah Mansfield, his grieving widow, said her healthy husband then began ‘clutching his chest on the sofa.

A post-mortem examination revealed that he had 392mg of caffeine per litre of blood, equivalent to up to 200 cups of coffee.

An inquest investigating Mr Mansfield’s death heard how 78mg per litre of blood or more can be fatal, implying that the personal trainer received nearly five times the lethal level.

Mr Mansfield’s medical cause of death was declared as caffeine poisoning today at the inquest, and his death was ruled as a misadventure by a coroner.
