Who was Todd Haimes? Artistic Director and CEO of Roundabout Theatre Company Dies at 66

Todd Haimes was a Theatrical producer who served as the artistic director and CEO of Roundabout Theatre Company for several decades before his death.

He died from complications from osteosarcoma in New York City on April 19, 2023, according to his close friend, Matt Polk. He was 66 years old.

Haimes joined the Roundabout as a managing director in 1983. During that time, the company was in financial ruins, recording debts of $2.4 million while struggling to operate only a rented space located in Chelsea.

He opened Roundabout’s first Broadway theatre located in Criterion Center at Broadway and 45th Street. He went on to operate a multimillion-dollar renovation of the Selwyn Theatre, which eventually became Roundabout’s flagship American Airlines Theatre and home to classic Broadway plays and musicals.

Under his supervision, the company has won numerous awards including 38 Tony Awards, 59 Drama Desk Awards, 73 Outer Critics Circle Awards, 21 Lucille Lortel Awards, 14 Audelco Awards, 14 Obie Awards, and 5 Olivier Awards.

Since 2000 when Haimes opened the American Airlines Theatre, there have been many successful shows like The Man Who Came to Dinner (starring Nathan Lane), Big River (2004), The Pajama Game (2006), On the 20th Century (2015), Long Day’s Journey Into Night (2016), and A Soldier’s Play (2020).
