Each had been drinking at a Memorial Day weekend house party, and Smart and Flores appeared to be in good spirits by all accounts.
Since an initial interview with investigators at the time of Smart’s disappearance, Paul Flores has refused to cooperate with authorities.
According to Tribune archives, he did not reveal details in a 1996 appearance before a San Luis Obispo grand jury, nor in a 1997 deposition in which he repeatedly cited his right against self-incrimination.

Paul Flores later told police that he and Kristin Smart parted ways near his dorm, Santa Lucia Hall, on their way back to Muir Hall.
Paul Flores was guilty of first-degree murder. Paul Flores could face 25 years to life in prison for the conviction.
Prosecutors claimed Flores raped or attempted to rape Smart and murdered her in his dorm room at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and that his father assisted in moving her body to his home in nearby Arroyo Grande, where she was hidden for a time under his deck.
