Who was Sheldon Harnick? American Lyricist Dead at 99

Sheldon Harnick was an American popular lyricist who was very popular in Broadway productions. He wrote the libretto for the opera Coyote Tales with music by Henry Mollicone, which received its world premiere at the Lyric Opera of Kansas City in March 1988. He also wrote the book, music, and lyrics to the musical Dragons, which was performed in 2003 at the Luna Stage in Montclair, New Jersey.

He wrote the lyrics and co-wrote the book with Norton Juster for the musical The Phantom Tollbooth, based on the book by Juster. The musical premiered at Kennedy Center in 2007.

Harnick won several awards through his works. Some of them include three Tony Awards, the Pulitzer Prize in Drama for Fiorello, an Award of Merit from the University of Pennsylvania Glee Club, a Drama League Award (2016), Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972, and the Johnny Mercer Award in 1990.

He died on Friday, June 23, 2023, at the age of 99. His death occurred at his home in Manhattan.
