Rod Holcomb, an Emmy-winning director renowned for his work on “ER” and other notable series such as “Battlestar Galactica,” “The Six Million Dollar Man,” and “China Beach,” passed away at the age of 80. Throughout his illustrious 40-year career, Holcomb left an indelible mark on the television landscape.

Holcomb, a longtime member of the Directors Guild and a key participant in negotiating committees, directed hundreds of TV episodes. His impressive body of work earned him four Emmy nominations, three for “ER” and one for “China Beach,” along with three DGA nominations. From 1970s classics like “The Six Million Dollar Man” and “Battlestar Galactica” to more recent hits such as “Elementary,” “Chicago Fire,” and “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders” in the 2010s, Holcomb’s credits spanned decades.

His directorial contributions extended to a plethora of popular series, including “The Mentalist,” “Rizzoli & Isles,” “CSI: Miami,” “Justified,” “NCIS: Los Angeles,” “The West Wing,” “The Equalizer,” and many others.

Over the course of his career, Holcomb directed an impressive 21 pilots, showcasing his knack for bringing new shows to life. Notably, he directed the pilot and series finale of “ER,” contributing to the show’s success.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Holcomb focused extensively on television movies, working on projects like “A Promise to Keep,” “Silverfox,” “Finding the Way Home,” “A Message From Holly,” and more. He also directed the 1991 feature film “Chains of Gold.”

Born on May 28, 1943, in San Francisco, Holcomb initiated his show business journey in the mailroom of ABC Studios in Los Angeles. His career took a significant turn when he was asked to write a promo for ABC’s hit series “The Six Million Dollar Man.” Impressed by his work, the network hired him as an associate producer, leading to subsequent opportunities as a director.

After the conclusion of “The Six Million Dollar Man” in 1978, Holcomb directed the original “Captain America” film in 1979. Throughout his career, he demonstrated a remarkable talent for storytelling and visual artistry, leaving an enduring legacy in the world of television.
