Who was Peter Nero? Grammy Award-Winning Pianist Dead at 89

Grammy award-winning pianist, Peter Nero has died at the age of 89. He recorded an album and won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Since then, he won another Grammy Award and got nominated for 10 more times.

He recorded his first album under the name of Bernie Nerow in July 1957 under the Mode Label MOD-LP117 which shows his technical virtuosity in the jazz genre.

Nero’s first major national TV success came when he was just 17 years when he was chosen to perform Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue on Paul Witeman’s TV special. He went on to appear in many top variety and talk shows, including 11 guest appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show and numerous appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. 

He is known for several songs including Theme From Love Story, Brian’s Song, Love Theme from “Romeo and Juliet,” Tender Is The Night, Love Is Blue, I’ve Gotta Be Me, The First Time Ever, You’ve Got a Friend, Mountain Greenery, and more.
