It is named for a Scotch-Irish 18th-century settler. It’s a steady climb of 1,700 feet that is moderately difficult and you should give yourself at least 4 to 6 hours to make the trip.

A knob is also a popular place for picnics, though exercising caution is necessary because of the steep drop-offs nearby.

Who was McAfee’s Knob named after?

McAfee Knob is named after James McAfee, a Scotch-Irish immigrant who settled in the Catawba Valley in the late 1730s.

McAfee Knob is the tallest mountain in the area surrounding Catawba, at an elevation of nearly 3,200 feet (980 m). Much of Catawba Mountain was open farmland in the mid-1900s.

McAfee Knob was prominently featured in the 2015 major motion picture A Walk in the Woods, starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte. McAfee Knob appears on the movie’s poster.
