Mark Sheehan, the co-founder and lead guitarist of the popular Irish rock band The Script has died. The band revealed via its social media pages on Friday, April 14, that the guitarist, born on October 29, 1976 in Dublin, died in a hospital following a brief illness aged 46.

The statement announcing his passing read:
“Much loved husband, father, brother, band mate and friend Mark Sheehan passed away today in hospital after a brief illness,”
“The family and group ask fans to respect their privacy at this tragic time.”

The Script was formed in Dublin in 2001 with Sheehan on guitar, his childhood friend Danny O’Donoghue as the lead singer, and Glen Power on drums.
The Script’s self-titled debut album was released in 2008 and went to number one in both the UK and Ireland. It featured hits including We Cry, Breakeven, and The Man Who Can’t Be Moved, with the latter peaking at No 2 in the UK singles charts.
Between 2010 and 2019, the band amassed more UK No 1 albums than any other Irish act.
Mark Sheehan is survived by his wife of 18 years, Rina Sheehan and three children.
