Who was Judi Dench first husband Michael Williams?

Michael Williams was a British actor who was married to Dame Judi Dench. Dench married Michael Williams in 1971; they remained together until his death from lung cancer in 2001.

Their only child, daughter Finty Williams, was born in 1972 and became an actress. Through her daughter, Dench has a grandson who was born in 1997.

Michael Williams played both classical and comedy roles. He was best known for co-starring in the sitcom A Fine Romance with his wife Dame Judi Dench, and for voicing Dr Watson in the long-running Sherlock Holmes adaptations for BBC Radio.

Michael Williams was appointed a Knight of St Gregory (KSG) by Pope John Paul II shortly before his death from lung cancer at the age of 65 for his contribution to Catholic life in the United Kingdom.

On January 10, 2001, the honour was officially bestowed upon him at home. He died the following day and was laid to rest in the churchyard of St Leonard’s, the Anglican parish church of Charlecote, Warwickshire.
