Ed Flanagan joined the Lions as a rookie in 1965 after being drafted in the fifth round out of Purdue.
He spent ten seasons in Detroit, where he was named to the Pro Bowl three years in a row from 1969 to 1971.
“He was a Pro Bowl centre and a member of what was widely regarded as the best offensive line in the NFL at the time,” former NFL coach Chuck Knox told The Detroit News in a 2015 interview.
“He was a fantastic centre.” He had wrestled in high school and college and had excellent balance. He was also tough and intelligent.”
Ed retired after two seasons with the San Diego Chargers. Flanagan has only missed one start in his 165-game career. As of 2013, he was an assistant coach with the Cedar Rapids Titans of the Indoor Football League.
