Who was Carolyn Bryant? Emmett Till Accuser Dead at 88

Emmett Till’s accuser, Carolyn Bryant has died at the age of 88. She died in a healthcare facility on Tuesday, April 25, 2023.

Till was accused by Carolyn of staring at her lustfully in a grocery shop in August 1955. He was visiting his family in Mississippi when the incident occurred.

Carolyn also accused him of making inappropriate comments and grabbing her at the shop. A few days later, Till was abducted at gunpoint by two white men from his home.

The husband of Carolyn, Roy Bryant, and his brother JW Milam were later charged with regard to the kidnap of Till in an arrest that took place in 1955. They were both acquitted of murder by an all-White jury following the trial in which Carolyn testified that Till grabbed and verbally threatened her.

In an interview with Look Magazine in 1956, Roy and Milan admitted to the killing of Till. Milam died in 1980 and Roy died of cancer in 1994.

Even until her death, Carolyn did not face any charges as the authorities stated that they “didn’t want to bother” her because she had two children to take care of.
