“Pokémon” is a syllabic abbreviation for the Japanese business Pocket Monsters. The term “Pokémon” is used to describe both the whole Pokémon franchise and all fictitious characters that have appeared in works of Pokémon-related media.

Because “Pokémon” is the same in the singular and plural, it is and would be grammatically acceptable to say “one Pokémon” and “many Pokémon,” as well as “one Pikachu” and “many Pikachu.”

The original notion for Pokémon, albeit with a different concept and name, came to Satoshi Tajiri, the executive director of Pokémon, in 1989, around the time the Game Boy was released.

Tajiri’s interest in the popular pastime of collecting insects as a child served as the inspiration for the Pokémon universe, both in video games and the wider fictional world of Pokémon.

Players are known as Pokémon Trainers and have three main goals: to finish the national Pokédex by transferring Pokémon from other regions, to finish the regional Pokédex by gathering all of the species of Pokémon that can be found in the made-up region where a game takes place.

And to train a team of powerful Pokémon from those they have caught to compete against other Trainers’ teams in order to eventually win the Pokémon League and become the region’s champion.
