Jamaal Anthony Bowman was born on April 1, 1976, in Manhattan, New York, United States of America. He is also a member of the Lower Hudson Valley chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America.

Jamaal Bowman received his Master of Arts in counselling from Mercy College. He also earned a Doctor of Education in educational leadership from Manhattanville College.

Jamaal Bowman founded the public middle school, Cornerstone Academy for Social Action in 2009. He tied the knot with his longtime partner Melissa Oppenheimer with whom he shares three children.
