The series delves into the origins of the Mexican drug war, beginning with a loose and disorganised confederation of small, independent marijuana growers and dealers.

It depicts the formation and rise of the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1980s, as Miguel ngel Félix Gallardo unites several plazas, or territories, to form an infamous drug empire.

It also depicts the kidnap, torture and murder of Kiki Camarena a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent.

Although many of the events and characters are based on true events, some liberties were taken to create a cohesive narrative of the Mexican drug war.
