While Warner Bros. can distribute the movie, they don’t necessarily own the original tale. The Roald Dahl Literary Estate probably still calls the shots on the characters and main plot, meaning Warner Bros. needs their nod for any future adaptations.
Jumping ahead to the 2005 rendition, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” Warner Bros. Pictures snagged both production and distribution rights through its acquisitions. Again, though, the story rights likely remain with the Roald Dahl Literary Estate.

Fast forward to the 2023 release, simply titled “Wonka.” Warner Bros. Pictures takes the reins once more for production and distribution. This time, since it’s an origin story centered on Willy Wonka, Warner Bros. probably has a firmer grip on the narrative and characters within the broader Wonka universe.
So, ownership of “Wonka” fluctuates depending on the movie, with Warner Bros. usually holding the distribution and sometimes production rights, while the essence of the story remains in the hands of the Roald Dahl Literary Estate, ensuring any future adaptations stay true to the original magic.
