The New York Mets are a professional baseball team based in the Queens borough of New York City. The Mets are a part of the National League (NL) East division in Major League Baseball (MLB). They are one of two major league teams based in New York City, with the American League’s (AL) New York Yankees being the other.

The Mets were founded in 1962 to replace New York’s departing NL teams, the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants. They were one of baseball’s first expansion teams. The team’s colours are reminiscent of the Dodgers’ blue and the Giants’ orange.

Steve Cohen, who owns 95% of the Mets, became the team’s majority owner on October 30, 2020, making him the team’s current richest owner. He paid $2.475 billion purchasing the team from the Wilpon family, with the Wilpons maintaining the remaining 5%.

Bill Maher does not own the met. Maher invested in a minority stake in the New York Mets in 2012 that has since tripled in value now that Steve Cohen has bought the team from the Wilpon family for $2.4 billion.
