The team was founded in 1926 and was known as the Detroit Cougars until 1930. The team was known as the Detroit Falcons for the 1930–31 and 1931–32 seasons until changing their name to the Red Wings in 1932.

As of 2021, the Red Wings have won the most Stanley Cups of any NHL organisation situated in the United States and are third in total Stanley Cup titles, trailing only the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs.

Olympia is a division of Ilitch Holdings and is owned by Marian Ilitch. It owns or manages the Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Tigers, Fox Theatre, Joe Louis Arena (management), Comerica Park (management), Cobo Arena (management), City Theatre, Hockeytown Café, and the new Little Caesars Arena, which will house the Red Wings and Detroit Pistons.
