Who is the true King of Spain?

Felipe VI is the true King of Spain. He is the son of the former king, Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia. Felipe VI ascended the throne on June 19, 2014, upon the abdication of his father, Juan Carlos I.

In 1986, on his 18th birthday, Felipe swore allegiance to Juan Carlos and was officially named heir to the throne.

Having received training at each of Spain’s armed service academies, Felipe was commissioned as an officer in the army, navy and air force and was certified as a helicopter pilot.

His reign has been marked by his dissolution of the Spanish Parliament in 2016 string condemnation of the Catalonian independence referendum, the COVID-19 pandemic and moves towards greater transparency in royal affairs.
