Jim Walton was born in Newport, Jackson County, Arkansas, as the third child of Walmart co-founder Sam Walton and Helen Walton.

Walton received a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in Marketing from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas in 1971 after graduating from Bentonville High School in 1965. He worked for Walmart and was involved in its real-estate transactions.

In 1975, he became president of the family-owned Walton Enterprises after serving for four years. Walton was appointed to the Wal-Mart Board of Directors on September 28, 2005, in place of his deceased brother, John. He was the CEO of his family’s Arvest Bank before becoming president.

Walton was reported to own over 152 million Walmart shares worth more than $11 billion in September 2016.
